Our Vision for Music at Jupiter Primary School

At Jupiter we provide all students with a high-quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a life-long love of music, increases their self-confidence, creativity, and imagination, and provides opportunities for self-expression and a sense of personal achievement. We recognise that Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate pupils. It is a vehicle for individual expression and it can play an important role in the personal development of all pupils. We offer opportunities for students to develop their talents in all aspects of music including composition, singing and appreciation.

Pupils are fully engaged and excited by their music lessons and are actively involved in creating and developing musical ideas using voice and instruments. They are increasingly challenged as they move through the school. Dedicated spaces and high quality resources ensure effective provision. Music lessons and workshops develop skills and offer an opportunity to show and develop our school values. Staff are sensitive to any barriers which can prevent participation and adapt the curriculum to ensure inclusion of all. This is achieved through setting tasks which are open-ended and can have a variety of inclusive responses and success measures.

All children in the school have specialist instrumental teaching every year, offering an opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence and to develop self-discipline. Children have opportunities to apply their specialist training in a variety of regular performances, both to their peers and wider audiences. An in tune choir nurtures a sense of group identity and togetherness, as children use a range of voices to harmonise effectively. They analyse their own singing to improve and have high quality performance opportunities both within and beyond the school, including at some impressive venues.

Creating, performing, and listening to music can be a spiritual experience for many. We encourage children to reflect on the important effect that music can have on their mood and senses, including in assemblies. Pupils are given the opportunity to experience music from different cultures which encourages positive attitudes towards others. Children can express their opinions about a wide variety of musical pieces, developing aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment and can compose in a range of styles. Pupil outcomes are assessed during lessons and children are offered feedback to support future progress. Teachers identify gifted and talented musicians and provide them with further opportunities.

Our Music Curriculum

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression, and it can play an important role in the personal development of people. Music reflects the culture and society that we live in, and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to learn more about the world we live in.

At Jupiter Primary School, our Music curriculum provides all pupils with a high quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a life-long love of music. It increases their self-confidence, creativity, and imagination, providing opportunities for self-expression and a sense of personal achievement. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform, and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and begin to make judgements about the quality of music. We offer opportunities for children to develop their talents in all aspects of music including composition, singing and performing.
